How to Play

The exciting new card game where your luck can change as fast as your color.

Ages 8 through adult

Object

Be the first player to score 1,000 points by changing all your Play Cards to match the color of your Color Card.

Components

CHAMELEON is 108 cards, separated into two decks before play:

Color Cards โ€” 32 cards

(black back with the four-colored Chameleon).

Play Cards โ€” 76 cards

(brown back with two green Chameleons).

Keep the two decks separate, shuffled separately, and dealt separately at all times.

The Deal

Determine the dealer (the deal passes left after each round). Deal seven Play Cards (brown deck) face down to each player, and one Color Card (black deck) face up in front of each player. Place the remaining cards of each deck face down, separately, in the center. Turn the top Play Card face up to start a discard pile. There are now three center piles; each player holds seven Play Cards and shows one Color Card.

Basic Play

Play begins with the person to the dealer's left and passes left. On your turn, choose ONE:

  1. Take the top card from the Play Card pile, or
  2. Take the top card from the discard pile, or
  3. Take the top card from the Color Card pile.

If you draw from the Play Card pile or the discard pile, you must then discard a Play Card face up, ending your turn. If you draw a Color Card (hoping to change your color), place it face up on your previous Color Card, ending your turn.

Going Out

Change all seven Play Cards in your hand to the same color, matching your top Color Card. You cannot draw and go out on the same turn. When someone goes out, all hands are revealed and scored.

Scoring a Round

  • Cards matching your top Color Card โ†’ added to your score.
  • Cards not matching โ†’ subtracted.
  • The player who Goes Out gets a 100-point bonus.

Shuffle and start a new round. First to 1,000+ wins (if two pass 1,000, highest total wins).

Other Rules

  • Skip and Reverse cards may be drawn from the discard pile. If they match your Color Card they count positive; if not, negative. You may go out with Skip/Reverse cards that match your color.
  • Wild cards can be any color and always count positive.
  • Color Change cards always count negative; you cannot go out holding one, and they can never be taken from the discard pile.
  • No card taken from the discard pile may be discarded on the same turn.
  • Starting flips: Skip up โ†’ player left of dealer is skipped. Reverse up โ†’ dealer plays first, passing right. Color Change up โ†’ player left of dealer draws a new Color Card, then play begins normally.

Word Cards

  • Skip โ€” the next player is skipped.
  • Reverse โ€” reverses the direction of play.
  • Wild โ€” may be used as any color; never discard it.
  • Color Change โ€” when discarded, choose any player but yourself to draw a new Color Card; play then continues in natural order.

Two-Handed Play

Remove all Reverse cards. When a Skip is played, that player plays again. A Color Change card may be played on either the opponent or oneself.

Suggested Strategies

  • Watch what opponents pick up from the discard pile to read their color.
  • Don't discard the color the next player is collecting โ€” wait for the direction to switch if you can.
  • Play a Color Change when you know an opponent's Color Card matches the color they're collecting.

Helpful Hints

  • Out of Play Cards? Reshuffle all but the top discard.
  • Out of Color Cards? Reshuffle all but each player's top Color Card.
